Over the past ten years, since graduating from Drama Centre, London, Dan has built Iris into a celebrated facet of London’s fringe theatre scene. Each year Daniel directs at least one of the main summer shows as well as, for the last five years, writing the family shows. He also provides dramaturgical support to all of Iris Theatre’s Shakespeare projects, including as part of Iris’ growing tradition of developing new musical theatre.
Beyond Iris Theatre Dan has worked on new writing projects with Theatre503 and First Draft Theatre as well as directing a panto at the Castle in Wellingborough. He has also worked with the Circus Space to undertake an Arts Council funded research and development process into a circus, dance and theatre piece called Circuit.
The other main strand of his professional biography is his work directing Shakespeare in Austria. He started his directing career with the Shakespeare in Styria Company, for whom he directed five shows, and with the Vienna English Theatre, for whom he both wrote and directed for their national tours.
Over the last three years Iris Theatre and Daniel Winder have been nominated for nine Offwestend Awards; and his 2016 production of Treasure Island won the Best Production for Young People in the ‘Offies’, with the 2017 adaptation of Hansel & Gretel (which he wrote) being shortlisted for the same award the following year.
