Ruth

13 June

With the added ingredients of sex, class and murder it made for a headline-grabbing case in 1950s Britain – the peroxide blonde ‘lady of the night’ who shot and killed her handsome upper class lover and was then hanged for the crime at Holloway Jail, making her the last woman to be put to death in Britain.

Ruth’s sensational story has now been reimagined as a British noir musical entitled RUTH. This special concert performance, narrated by Stephen Greif, will weave together an emotive score, original film footage and old photographs to retell the story of the glamorous but doomed nightclub hostess, whose execution shocked the nation and led to the abolition of capital punishment in the UK.

Music by John Cameron, Francis Rockliff and James Reader. Lyrics by Caroline Slocock and John Cameron. Directed by Andy Morahan.
